Balance Within Your Training...

"But I hate cardio"

No, you hate the feeling of discomfort, now shall we?

Cardio Vs Weight Training...

Whether you're purely in it to hit that 1 rep max deadlift or run a sub 4 hour marathon, you need balance in your training.

The list of benefits for both modalities of training go beyond just the aesthetics, with both affecting your central nervous system + skeletal system in different ways.

Why you should add in some cardio...(For lifters)

Cardio burns more calories than lifting - bump up your weekly burn even with 20 minutes extra of cardio. If you want to be in a calorie deficit without restricting your food, cardio can help you get there!

Cardio has more direct heart benefits than lifting - While lifting affects your heart health indirectly, cardio has a more hands on approach to those heart gains.

Cardio is better for longevity longterm - If you've got plans for 2075 you should probably partake in some cardio. Studies show that those who did cardio alone would live longer than those who did weight training alone.

Why you should add in some weight training...(For cardio-nuts)

Weight training strengthens the skeletal system - If you love HIIT workouts or half marathons on the weekend, you're relying on your skeletal system to get you through just as much as your lungs!

Weight training improves posture - Most common aches + pains (think sciatica) are the result of poor posture. Weight training can help reduce the risk of this happening by improving your overall posture.

Weight training is better for building + maintaining muscle mass - Lifting allows you to maintain muscle + burn fat at a much better rate than cardio (which mainly burns fat).

Overall, strive for balance within your training so you can reap the benefits of both modalities. They compliment each other + combining the two can give you a whole new world of workouts. Personally, I get bored very easily, combining cardio + weights keeps my interest even when I'm not feeling it!

If you subscribe to the "I hate cardio" club, chances are you hate the idea of cardio. Your idea of a cardio workout is 45 minutes on the treadmill, staring at the same spot on the wall until it's over. Give cardio another chance to woo you.

If you aren't sure about picking up the weights, or where to start, having a gym introduction or an introductory PT session can really boost your confidence + show you how its not all that scary!
