"From Monday I'm going to start the gym 6 days a week..."
"Starting tomorrow, I'm only going to eat Quinoa..."
Sound familiar?
Whether it's New Years or a new week, as a population, we suck at forming new habits. Not because we're hopeless, not because we lack total discipline, but rather because our eyes are too big for our belly so to speak...
If we're finallly ready to make big changes it's usually the result of 1 of 2 things;
We're fed up enough with our current situation to change
We've been motivated or inspired to change
Both leave us chomping at the bit to get going, which is great, but it can also leave us stuck exactly where we are...why?
We're so keen to absolutley transform ourselves that we set ridiculous + unachievable goals...I applaud our self belief but just no.
It's like smokers going cold turkey, deleting every social media app or only eating boiled eggs for 60 days...You're set up for failure, before you start.
Back to December 31st + we have the same yearly, almost useless idea of New Years Resolutions. Research shows us that 95% of resolutions made are fitness orientated...and of those 43% think their new habits will last 1 month. So why are we even bothering ey?
So, going forth I propose the
"No Years Resolution"
Starting where you are, with what you have, right now.
Avoid the pressure of New Years, that post Christmas feeling of over indulgement that guilts you into crazy goals. Instead we start small now so we enter the holiday season in a healthy mind.
Start Small
Choose bitesize goals:
I will go to the gym for 15 minutes today
I will read 1 page of my book a day
I will run 1km every week
These smaller, more manageable goals leave us wanting to do more rather than dreading our new 10km running habit we've picked up.
Make it Attractive
Your new habits need to be something appealing to you.
If you hate running, don't pick running as your new choice of cardio.
If you cant stand Quinoa, don't make it your new staple carb.
To motivate yourself, it needs to matter to you.
Make it Sustainable
To a certain degree, new habits must fit in with your life in order for them to be sustainable.
If you have 3 children, a new pilates class at 3pm on a tuesday isn't sustainable.
If you don't drive, don't join a gym 45 minutes from your house, that shit isn't sustainable.
If you want to achieve your goals, you need to give yourself the best chance possible.
In closing, to heck with New Years Resolutions, as most of you voted , they are are indeed "whack" + set almost everyone up for failure. So lets avoid that nonsense + start at the perfect time...right now!
Get in touch if you need a helping hand forming the right habits for you + take the first step towards change.
